The Tastee Diner, a mainstay in Silver Spring for nearly 80 years, closed its doors last March. Now plans for what will be constructed at the diner site along Georgia Avenue, and how the diner car will be incorporated, are moving forward.

Roadside Development filed a sketch plan with Montgomery County this month for a new high-rise residential development with up to 525 apartments at 8676 Georgia Avenue and 8601 Cameron Street (map).

As part of the new development, Roadside will preserve the Tastee Diner car as part of the project.

"The Applicant is proposing to retain the Historic Tastee Diner’s orientation toward Cameron Street but move it west approximately 45 feet toward Ramsey Street, to a more prominent corner location, with deeper open space at its front," documents filed with Montgomery County stated. "The exterior of the existing 800 square foot diner will be retained, restored, and incorporated into the first floor of the mixed-use building and is currently anticipated to function as retail or restaurant space."

The design for the 30-story project, from Bonstra|Haresign Architects, is in the early conceptual stages, but in addition to 25,000 square feet of retail, there will be at least 340 parking spaces and 15 percent of the apartments will be moderately-priced dwelling units.

While the Silver Spring location closed, there are still two Tastee Diner outposts in Bethesda and Laurel.
