Craigslist has another competitor in the apartment rental market: Zumper, a start-up that hopes to stand out from the crowd with a few features and apps is launching in DC in early July, UrbanTurf has learned.
Like Lovely and PadMapper, Zumper is aiming to break into the market currently dominated by Craigslist. Zumper’s website has a map-based interface with up-to-date apartment listings that can be filtered by price, size and location.
The “up-to-date” front is where Zumper is hoping to differentiate itself from competitors. They recently released an iPhone app, Zumper Pro, that can be used by brokers to list a house or apartment from their phone. They can take photos and input information while on site at a property, and the listing will sync up directly to the website. (Zumper Pro has already launched in DC, but the consumer site won’t be launching for a few weeks.)
“The broker may get calls within minutes,” founder Anthemos Georgiades told UrbanTurf.
In markets like New York, San Francisco and DC, rentals can get snapped up within a day if not hours, so getting the listings up first may provide eager tenants with an incentive to stop by Zumper ahead of the competition.
Georgiades acknowledges that Craigslist will be around for years to come, and they give users of the Zumper Pro app a way to make “flyers” that can be cross-posted to Craigslist. However, they are hoping that eventually, their site will set itself apart with its accuracy rate, fewer duplications and no spam listings.
Though the app is currently available only on the iPhone, they hope to launch their Andoid app soon.
