This week in What X Rents You, UrbanTurf looks in the $1,000 to $1,100 a month range to see what the DC area rental market has to offer. As many UrbanTurf readers already know, finding an apartment all to yourself in this range in the region is almost impossible, and when we combed Craigslist for options, the only suitable places we could find were shared living situations.
800 Square Feet in an Alexandria Home
For $1,000, a renter could have access to their own wing in an Alexandria home. A couple of empty nesters are looking for someone to rent a large bedroom, private bathroom and den (complete with a TV and some furnishings) in their house. Parking, wireless internet, washer/dryer and utilities are all included, but there are a few conditions: the owners would prefer someone who doesn’t have to use the shared kitchen very often, and words like “peaceful” and “quiet” pop up in the ad. It is available immediately and smokers need not apply.

A Bedroom in a Columbia Heights English Basement
One bedroom is available in a two-bedroom English basement across the street from Wonderland in Columbia Heights. The unit seems nicer than a typical basement apartment, with hardwood floors, high ceilings, a landscaped backyard, a washer/dryer and a renovated kitchen. The available room is full of light, and the roommate would be an Italian physician. The room is available on February 1st.

A Furnished Bedroom in Bethesda
This rental is a room in a downtown Bethesda apartment, close to Trader Joe’s, Barnes and Noble and the many restaurants in the neighborhood. The renter would be sharing the two-bedroom condo with a “mostly vegetarian” non-profiteer looking for a respectful roommate. The room is furnished and modestly sized (11 feet by 12 feet), but has windows on two sides. Utilities, parking and internet are included in the rent.
