In this week's Under Contract, we highlight a portion of a castle in Maryland and a former bank on Capitol Hill that recently found buyers.
Under A Week For a Castle in Chevy Chase
Rossdhu Gate in Chevy Chase is the remaining piece of a 30-room castle built by socialite Daisy Calhoun and her husband in the mid-1920s. The original castle was built on 100 acres and the design was supposed to mimic that of a 15th-century castle built by Calhoun’s family in Scotland. Rossdhu Gate found a buyer after just six days on the market, and officially went under contract last week.
The gatehouse has four bedrooms and 3.5 baths and an interior that harkens back to another era. It was owned by the same couple from 1939 until the 1970s and then changed hands several times over the past few decades.

Four Months For a Former Bank
Back in February, UrbanTurf reported on the old City Bank building on Capitol Hill hitting the market. Last week, the building went under contract with contingencies.
The building at 536 8th Street SE (map) has not served its original purpose for quite some time. The three level all brick property, built in 1908 along Barracks Row, currently serves as the offices for Oehme, van Sweden Landscape Architects.
The space was renovated over the years with striking front doors, huge windows, egg and dart crown molding, coffered ceilings, brick pilasters, and pendant fixtures. Despite the renovations, one can still tell from photos that it used to be a bank.
