1735 19th Street NW
From the early 1890s until 1970, the St. Thomas Episcopal Parish in Dupont Circle sat near the corner of 18th and Church Street NW. However, in 1970, a fire burned most of the church to the ground. After the fire, the parish retreated to the remaining section of the building located adjacent to what is now a park, and it has operated there ever since.
Living Room
Now, in a push to rebuild the church to its former glory, the vestry is selling the row house that has served as its rectory for 40 years.
1735 19th Street NW is a six-bedroom townhouse with a ground-floor one-bedroom apartment located just south of S Street. Up until three years ago, the rector and her husband lived in the main section of the house, and the church’s music director lived in the apartment. However, the rector has since bought a home of her own, and the upper levels of the house have become home to renters, while the music director still lives on the ground floor.
Bedroom
Aside from its sheer size, the outdoor space and the fact that it comes with off-street parking, the house stands out because it is quite a good bargain. Nowhere in Dupont would one be able to find a home this large and in such good condition at this price. The listing agents told UrbanTurf that the church hopes that the property sells quickly, so that they no longer have to be landlords, and can move forward with plans to rebuild the church.
