Thanks to renovations, additions and other touches that owners have incorporated over the years, many homes in DC, that were once in rough shape, hardly resemble the properties they were years ago. Such is the case with This Week’s Find.

In 2002, Sara Elliott and her husband Victor Sant’Anna purchased a three-bedroom home on Ontario Road that needed minor renovations before the couple even moved in. Once that work was complete, it was another five years before Victor, an architect, and Sara set about creating a new addition and re-envisioning the backyard.

“We probably spent six months planning the addition and went through a dozen iterations,” Elliott told UrbanTurf.

The final plan resulted in 250 more square feet off the back of the house, which meant a new kitchen and a larger bedroom on the second floor. As is the case with a number of other sections of the house, storage factored heavily into the new kitchen design, which explains the built-ins and pantry that lie behind a wall of wide wood doors. The addition also added square footage to the upper level of the house, resulting in the depth of one of the children’s bedrooms increasing by four feet. (Originally 8 feet by 10 feet, the room is now 12-feet deep.)

When the couple bought the home almost a decade ago, the backyard was little more than gravel and concrete cordoned off by a chain-link fence. Described as “Victor’s labor of love” by Elliott, the outdoor space was outfitted with a deck, a pond and a new fence during the second renovation.

Over the years, the couple has also removed a wall between the living and dining areas, expanded the foyer, and turned the basement into an office. They are planning on moving up to Tenleytown with their children and, in addition to the house, they will miss the tight-knit feel of the block.

“I know that people say this a lot, but the neighbors on our street have become very close over the years,” Elliott said. “We even spend holidays together.”
