Plans and renderings were unveiled on Monday night for the first phase of the Battery Lane District development in downtown Bethesda.
Brown Development is partnering with Hensel Phelps on a 120-foot, 315-unit development that will be one of five sites on Battery Lane between Old Georgetown Road and Woodmont Avenue (map) that the team will redevelop in the coming years. The new development, designed by WDG Architecture, will be located on Site C, which is currently home to 147 garden apartments.

The design of the building puts a heavy emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. It will have public pedestrian connectivity via through-block connections on both sides of the building.
The connection on the east side will punch through to a police station, and on the west there is the potential for an eventual connection with a walkway from Battery Lane to the edge of the new development. There will also be a dedicated bikeway connection from Woodmont Avenue to Old Georgetown Road with improvements planned along Site C. The building will also have two-story units with stoops that lead out to one of the pedestrian walkways.
The development will have a number of amenities, including a two-story lobby, a fitness center, community gardens, a dog run, a pool, an interior courtyard and a number of large green spaces for residents. There will also be a two-level garage with 213 spaces.

The apartments will range from studios to three-bedrooms with 15% reserved as moderately-priced units.
The development team expects to file a site plan with Montgomery County for this building in late-June, but construction is not expected to begin for about nine months.
