In this week’s edition of NoVa Best New Listings, we look at a historic Old Town home fit for a mayor, a two-level condo in a Rosslyn high-rise, and a home in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria with a non-creepy basement.

Four-Bedroom Old Town Home with Mayoral Pedigree

Having a detached home in Old Town, Alexandria, where small row houses fetch in the high six figures, is kind of a big deal. So, it’s not surprising that a former resident of this impressive three-level estate, built in 1800, was also kind of a big deal: Colonel Francis Peyton, who was Alexandria’s 18th and 20th mayor, called this manse home a couple of centuries ago. Alexandria has had dozens of mayors in its 250-plus year history, so it’s not all that rare to find a home that one of its mayor’s has lived in, but this really feels like a mayoral mansion with its first-floor atrium that runs the length of the home and a huge yard (by Old Town standards). Considering how fancy the main level is, with its ornate light fixtures and crown molding, the bedrooms and lower-level family room are surprisingly homey.

Alexandria Four-Bedroom with Large Walk-out Basement

The nicest feature of this four-bedroom home in the Fairfax County portion of Alexandria may be its gigantic walk-out basement. The lower-level rec room is filled with light, thanks to plenty of windows and a pair of French doors that lead to the backyard. The space has a good deal of room in which to run around, low-maintenance flooring, tons of built-in storage, and none of the things that make basements less than ideal (i.e. darkness, dankness, stuffiness, and overall creepiness).

Bi-Level One-Bedroom Arlington Condo

It may be a little pricey for a one-bedroom, but this 1,058 square-foot unit has more than just size going for it. The listing in Rosslyn’s Prospect House has a staircase that leads from the first-floor living room to an upper-level kitchen and dining room. The living room has floor-to-ceiling windows that lead out to a good-sized deck, and the bedroom (while a little plain) is certainly large by northern Virginia standards.
