Two years ago, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) awarded development rights for the historic Crummell School in Ivy City. Since then, the community has been lamenting the redevelopment plan as a loss of a site that should be completely public use. Now, the plans for the site have slightly changed as the development team tries to nudge the project forward.

Ivy City Partners, comprised of Jarvis Company, Stonebridge Carras and ProFish, was selected to restore the historic at Crummell School at 1900 Gallaudet Street NE (map) and proposed a plan to deliver 320 residential units, nearly 10,000 square feet of restaurant and retail, and ground-floor operations space for ProFish.

In the new iteration, all 40,000 square feet of ProFish, a seafood wholesale business, will be below-grade and a block of residences close to Gallaudet Street will be replaced with 6,800 square feet of open public space. With these changes, the residences have been shifted on the site, creating 115 affordable and 120 market rate units.

The Crummell School building must be restored to turn-key condition for community use as part of the plan, and ProFish owner Greg Casten and former councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. are encouraging neighbors to begin lobbying for their preferred use of the building and public grounds.

Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie is hosting a community meeting with the development team on Monday evening at Bethesda Baptist Church.
