DC has a handful of landmarks that are not monuments and the iconic Uptown Theater sign in Cleveland Park is one of those. However, it’s continued existence may be in peril.

AMC has filed an application with the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) to replace the glowing red Uptown sign that graces the facade of the movie theater at 3426 Connecticut Avenue NW (map) with an AMC sign.

REMOVE VINTAGE UPTOWN SIGN, REPLACE WITH NEW AMC SIGN,” a description of the project that is posted at the theater reads.

The theater is part of the Cleveland Park Historic District, so the removal of the sign has naturally prompted a response from the Cleveland Park Historic Society.

CPHS is aware of the application by AMC to replace the iconic sign on Cleveland Park’s 1936 Uptown Theater. We have received an outpouring of concern and support for saving the sign, which has graced the theater through 81 years and many changes of ownership. We are working with ANC commissioners and the Art Deco Society of Washington to respond.”

UrbanTurf will continue to monitor this filing as it moves forward at HPRB.
