Update: Frager's will likely open at Penn 11 in late March.
Nearly six years after a four-alarm blaze destroyed Capitol Hill institution Frager’s Hardware, completion of the Penn 11 condo development at 1101-1117 Pennsylvania Avenue SE (map) will soon pave the way for the store's return to its prior location. Since the fire, the store has been operating in a space a couple of blocks away on E Street.
The 34-unit development, a partnership between Perseus TDC, Westbrook Partners and Javelin 19 Investments, has just begun delivering its units. McWilliams|Ballard is handling marketing and sales.

Designed by Hickok Cole Architects, Penn 11 will also have 13,500 square feet of ground- and cellar-level retail, which will include a restaurant by Kevin Tien. Another 6,000 square feet of the commercial space will house Frager's, which is on a 25-year lease.
“Residents in the neighborhood have been waiting for an opportunity to bring Frager’s back, and we are extremely proud to be a part of a new era for this neighborhood icon,” Bob Cohen, president of Perseus TDC, said in a statement.
The hardware store celebrates its centennial next year.
