DC's public health emergency may be poised for another extension.
At Tuesday's legislative meeting, DC Council Chair Phil Mendelson is expected to introduce an emergency bill enabling the mayor to extend the public health emergency through December 31st. The state of emergency was most recently extended to October 9th in mid-July.
Councilmembers Anita Bonds and Elissa Silverman are also expected to co-introduce an emergency bill to strengthen the eviction moratorium currently in place in DC, a councilmember's staff person told UrbanTurf. Reportedly, although landlords cannot file for eviction with the courts, some have still been sending notices to vacate or other intimidating communication during the eviction moratorium to pressure tenants to move.
The Eviction Notice Moratorium Emergency Act of 2020 intends to prevent landlords from submitting notices to vacate to tenants for the duration of the moratorium. As with the eviction moratorium, the prohibition on notices would be active through 60 days following the conclusion of the public health emergency.
