Monadnock Development LLC, Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation and nARCHITECTS will soon be designing very small apartments for New York City. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday morning that the three partners won the adAPT NYC project, a competition to design, construct and operate the city’s first micro-unit apartment building.
Designers map out a microunit.
The winning proposal, “My Micro NY,” was chosen from 33 submissions. It will include 55 new apartments, ranging in size from 250 to 370 square feet, with ceilings of 9 to 10 feet and juliet balconies.
From the press release:
Designed by nARCHITECTS, ‘My Micro NY’ is an elegant building distinguished by the creative use of setbacks and subtle changes in the color of the brick cladding. A multi-purpose and transparently-glazed space on the ground floor will be programed for rehearsals, performances, lectures and other creative activities, in addition to a café. Inside, the efficient apartment design includes ample storage, such as a 16’-long overhead loft space and a full-depth closet. Compact kitchens contain a full-height pull-out pantry, a full-height fridge, range, and space for a convection microwave.
The look of the winning proposal, along with other finalists, will be revealed at the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibit “Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers” on Wednesday.

At Tuesday’s press conference, Bloomberg stressed that the micro-units would not be the city’s sole effort to increase affordable housing, and are intended for one or two resident to live in, rather than a family.
