A plan is in the works to create a historic district in Chevy Chase.
Last week, the Chevy Chase DC Conservancy submitted an application to the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) to create the Chevy Chase Historic District. The proposed district would encompass the neighborhood's commercial strip along Connecticut Avenue, as well as many of the residential blocks surrounding this stretch.

So, what does it mean for a portion of a neighborhood to become a historic district? The main effect is that buildings and homes within historic district boundaries around the city are subject to a review by DC's Historic Preservation Review Board. So if a home or property owner wanted to do a renovation, replace windows or change the exterior of the property, among other things, they would need to go before the board for approval. There are nearly 40 neighborhood historic districts around the city.
Once the application for the historic district has been deemed complete by the Historic Preservation Office, a hearing will be scheduled with the Historic Preservation Review Board where the board will vote to create the historic district of deny the application.
