A Bethesda Development Plans For The Kids Moving Back In

College graduates are returning home in record numbers to live with their parents, and a townhouse project in Bethesda has prepared for this new reality.

The 99 townhomes at Grosvenor Heights, a new development that will go on sale this weekend (map), will offer the option for a studio living suite to be built out on the home’s lower level. Instead of an open finished basement — generally the norm for new townhouse developments — developer EYA will build out lower level suites with kitchenettes, full bathrooms and sleeping areas.

“Many empty-nester customers have expressed to us that they want a space for their children to come home and live after college,” EYA’s Preston Innerst told UrbanTurf.

Research shows that there is a need for these types of living arrangements. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center revealed that 36 percent of adults ages 18 to 31 are living in their parents’ home, the highest share in 40 years. The findings in that study were re-confirmed in a U.S. Census report from a few months ago.

Innerst said that the suite option is available on every home at Grosvenor Heights, and that the extra cost will be in the range of $10,000-$15,000. The homes, under construction now, will start at $1.1 million.
