Another planned development in Northern Virginia is adding more residences to the several hundred that are already on the boards.

Last year, news broke of a proposed redevelopment of the Harris Teeter grocery store at 600 North Glebe Road (map) in Ballston and the remainder of the six-acre site extending toward North Carlin Springs Road.

New plans call for 732 apartments, a new Harris Teeter, an additional 10,600 square feet of retail space, and over 1,000 parking spaces across three buildings, as well as a half-acre public park. The previous proposal would have delivered 680 apartments across two buildings above the Harris Teeter and additional retail.

The construction phases will deliver:

  • A building with 255 apartments across the 2nd-6th floors with 64,851 square feet of ground-floor and 6,000 square feet of mezzanine-level retail, along with 215 parking spaces;
  • A six-floor building with 234 apartments and 545 parking spaces; and
  • An 11-floor building with 243 apartments with 10,592 square feet of ground-floor retail and 242 parking spaces.

North Tazewell and North Randolph Streets will be extended through the site to meet at a new intersection, and the three buildings will have maximum heights of 74 to 132 feet. The project would be constructed in three phases so that shoppers can continue to patronize the existing Harris Teeter while the new one is built. DCS Design is the architect.

The Arlington County Site Plan Review Committee is expected to consider the project at the end of the month.
