Zoning Commission Approves Map Amendment for WMATA Headquarters

Earlier this year, WMATA applied to rezone the site of its downtown DC headquarters as it began planning to relocate. Now, that map amendment has been approved opening the possibility for mixed-use development on the site.
Last night, the Zoning Commission unanimously approved a map amendment to rezone 600 5th Street NW (map) from D-2 to D-5-R. The latter zone would permit by-right residential or mixed-use development up to 120 feet tall (plus penthouse) on the site. The new zoning designation primes the location to be more attractive to a potential buyer.

The application also requests that the language for the D-5-R zone make an exception to allow any future development on the site to be subject to inclusionary zoning regulations, which typically do not apply to these zones.
WMATA announced last month its plan to move to a new location in L'Enfant Plaza.
