Will Metro Come to Potomac Yard?

This week has seen much discussion about the possibility of putting a new Metro station at the Potomac Yard mixed-use development along Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria (map). Potomac Yard first opened in 1997 and has seen development and density increase since. Even if approved, the opening of a new Metro station would be years away, but proponents believe now is an opportune moment to get the ball rolling.
“This is all at the very beginning stages, and it may not happen until five or 10 years down the road, but we want to make sure that we don’t miss our chance,” Alexandria mayor Bill Euille said, according to a report by WTOP.
The station would sit on existing track on the Blue and Yellow Lines between the Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road stops, making it only the second “in-fill” Metro station after New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U. That station on the Red Line opened in 2004 and serves as a linchpin of the nascent NoMa neighborhood in DC.
The cost of the potential Potomac Yard station would be between $100 and $150 million.
Not surprisingly, there is much debate about if and how the station should be added. See the report from Greater Greater Washington for specifics.
