Why Georgetown Would Have One of DC's Busiest Metro Stations

The intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown
There has been a lot of talk in recent years about bringing a Metro station to Georgetown, and on Friday, a contributor to Greater Greater Washington posited that a station in DC’s oldest and toniest neighborhood would be one of the system’s busiest.
Will Handsfield, the transportation director for the Georgetown Business Improvement District, claims that a Georgetown station would have one of the highest riderships during the morning rush hour for a variety of reasons. Among those reasons are the number of households that live within a hypothetical Metro entrance at Wisconsin and M Street NW that would use the line for commuting, and the logical direction of the line (from West End to Penn Quarter) along which many Georgetown residents already work.

As Metro plans out the next few decades, they are considering the possibility of running a Blue Line through H Street, NoMa and Georgetown. Right now, the Blue Line follows the same path as the Orange Line in most of DC proper. As revealed in the image above, the adjusted Blue Line would be bumped to the north of the Orange Line, with two stops in Georgetown — one at Georgetown University — as well as stops at Thomas Circle, the Convention Center, NoMa and two on the H Street Corridor, among others.
A Metro station as well as a number of other changes to the neighborhood are part of the BID’s Georgetown 2028 plan that UrbanTurf has reported on extensively. But if a Metro stop comes to Georgetown, you can be sure it won’t be for several decades.
