At just above $3,000 a month, larger homes like this charming bungalow near the Takoma Metro become available. The single-family home would be ideal for a family; it has a big backyard and lots of communal living space, as well as a small back deck. Out front is a front yard with that calling card of quiet living: a picket fence.

Two Bedrooms on the Hill

A move closer to the heart of the action gets you a little less space for your money, but an upgrade in terms of appliances and finishings. This two-bedroom Capitol Hill rowhouse unit seems ideal for a pair of professional roommates (particularly roommates who work on the Hill) with as the bedrooms are large and bright, though it looks like there’s just one bathroom shared between them. The kitchen has a breakfast bar as well as a small nook, and the living space by DC standards is pretty sizable.

Gated Living in Adams Morgan

If you like the Capitol Hill option, but feel like you need to be in Northwest, there is this option in Adams Morgan. The entry of the two-bedroom has a compact porch with room for a grill and a chair or two. Inside, there are 2.5 baths — no sharing necessary — and its location, just off Meridian Hill Park, puts in not too far from the action in Dupont Circle, Columbia Heights and 14th and U Streets. (The unit is also located in the gated community of Beekman Place, so there is an added security bonus.) The apartment has central A/C, a fireplace and parking for two cars.
