This week in What X Rents You, UrbanTurf looks in the $1,000 to $1,100 a month range to see what the DC area rental market has to offer. As many UrbanTurf readers already know, finding an apartment all to yourself in this range in the region is almost impossible, and when we combed Craigslist for options, we found that individual living situations at this price point were few and far between.
A Room in a Petworth Group House
Like many group houses, this Petworth three-bedroom Victorian offers some perks in exchange for a lack of privacy. There is a dedicated reading room, a fruit, flower and vegetable garden and what looks to be a very cool looking kitchen. Unlike most rental listings that advertise shared living situations, this ad details the personalities of the current roommates. Prospective renters will likely have to submit to extensive questioning: the description explicitly states that the current tenants are “looking for a good fit.” The bedroom is available starting on October 1st.

- Rent: $1,050 a month
- Bedrooms: One
- Bathrooms: One (shared)
Arlington One-Bedroom Apartment Near I-395
True one-bedrooms are rare at this price point, but one is available in Allendale Gardens, an Arlington building located just off of I-395 and Glebe Road. The apartment doesn’t have many frills but is relatively spacious, with a large kitchen and a balcony. Parking is available, and based on the location, the drive to Alexandria or DC looks pretty easy.

- Rent: $1,050 a month
- Bedrooms: One
- Bathrooms: One
A Room in the Heart of Bloomingdale
If Bloomingdale has a town center, it is the intersection of 1st Street NW and Florida Avenue NW, where the farmer’s market sets up and neighbors run into each other at Big Bear cafe. This group house, where one bedroom is up for rent, is apparently very close to the action. The four-bedroom home isn’t as grand as the Petworth Victorian above, but the listing seems a bit more laid back and the barrier to entry may be more slack. Also, with 2,500 square feet, four roommates can fit comfortably. The room up for rent is available immediately.
- Full Listing: Florida Avenue NW at First Street NW (map)
- Rent: $1,025 a month
- Bedrooms: One
- Bathrooms: One (shared)
