From DC to San Francisco, What $1 Million Buys

A home for sale for just under $1 million in DC.

UrbanTurf's What X Buys series has illustrated how far $1 million goes in the DC area several times over the years, with offerings ranging from a sprawling four-bedroom in Maryland to a two-bedroom condo in DC's toniest neighborhood.

Now, we have a sense of how far that budget goes in other parts of the country. 

A recent Zillow report examines what $1 million buys in metropolitan areas across the country. In 88 of the 100 largest cities, $1 million buys a detached single family home with anywhere from under 1,500 to over 6,000 square feet of living space. The study identifies the median $1 million home in DC as a three-bedroom rowhouse with 2.5 baths and 1,648 square feet of space.

Elsewhere in the DC area, $1 million goes further: the median million-dollar home in Silver Spring is 4,686 square feet, while in Fairfax, it is 3,815 square feet. In Arlington, $1 million can get you a 2,000 square foot house.

The one million dollar budget doesn't stretch nearly as far in some of the country's most expensive cities. In New York City, the median price for a 1,000 square-foot co-op is $1 million; in San Francisco, that drops down to 888 square feet.
