Early rendering of planned Fannie Mae redevelopment.

The rumors that Wegmans is coming to DC are no longer rumors.

On Sunday, it was announced that the New York-based grocer with a cult-like following will anchor the redevelopment of the Fannie Mae headquarters on Wisconsin Avenue.

Late last year, Japanese developer Sekisui House and Roadside Development partnered up to purchase Fannie Mae’s headquarters at 3900 Wisconsin Avenue NW (map). Rumors have been swirling for months that Wegmans would be the anchor grocery store tenant for the site, and at a community meeting in February, the development team mentioned the store several times.

“We are excited that Wegmans has committed to be a major part of this redevelopment,” Richard Lake, the founding partner of Roadside Development, said. “They not only bring their fabulous offerings, they consistently are one of the best employers in the country. Their participation will enable the team to attract other quality users who can meet the objectives of the area residents.”

At 80,000 square feet, the Wegmans planned at the Fannie Mae site will be smaller than most of the chain’s existing stores. A restaurant operated by Wegmans will also be a part of the development.

While no firm timeline is in place, the redevelopment site is expected to house as many as seven buildings that will include a mix of housing, office space, hotels, retail and below-grade parking. Roadside Development has engaged in several meetings with the neighborhood regarding the project, which will be developed by-right.
