U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) introduced legislation on Wednesday to make Washington, DC the 51st U.S. state.

"For years, I have fought alongside Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Muriel Bowser to make #DCStatehood a reality and to give the over 700,000 D.C. residents a voice, vote, and full representation in Congress," Carper said in a tweet.

The Washington D.C. Admission Act (S.B. 51) is progress towards D.C. statehood, but it will face an uphill battle to become a reality. If the Senate doesn't end the filibuster, the bill would need the support of at least ten Republican senators. Companion legislation passed the House of Representatives last year.

UrbanTurf will update this article as we receive more information about the bill.
