Two Architecture Firms Reportedly In Running To Design Washington Commanders Stadium

The chance to design the Washington Commanders’ highly anticipated new stadium has reportedly narrowed to two powerhouse firms.

The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala reported on Tuesday that HKS and HNTB are the two architects in the running to design the stadium.

Both firms bring impressive credentials to the table. HKS is best known for creating some of the NFL’s most iconic modern venues, including SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, AT&T Stadium in Dallas, and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. HNTB, meanwhile, has left its mark on the league with Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and more recently designed the Commanders’ upgraded locker room in Ashburn.

In September, the DC Council gave the Washington Commanders the green light to build a new stadium at the site of RFK Stadium. In addition to the new 65,000-seat venue, the 180-acre site will be reimagined into a series of “districts” that could deliver 5,000 to 6,000 new housing units, of which 30% would be affordable. 

The current delivery schedule has the stadium ready for games and events in 2030.
