This Week's Find: Where The Watergate Plumbers Lived: Figure 1
28 9th Street NE

Usually, the DC residence associated with the Watergate scandal is Bob Woodward’s old apartment on P Street. This Week’s Find, however, is where the bad guys lived.

28 9th Street NE was built in 1874, and hasn’t been on the market in about 40 years. When the current owners purchased the house in 1973, it had been poorly divided into apartments. And those apartments were occupied by The Plumbers, the group organized by President Richard Nixon who broke in to the Watergate to prevent classified information from being leaked to the press and represented the beginning of one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. The reason that the home became available in 1973 is because the group left the property (and maybe DC) when Nixon resigned.

And that is not the home’s only claim to fame. While the new owners were completely renovating the home in the 70s, a relative of Charles Rothwell, the stonemason who built the house, told them that the Buffalo Bill stayed there from time to time “during his Wild West Show years and later when he was fighting for Indian rights on Capitol Hill.”

In addition to its history, the four-bedroom, corner-lot home has been tastefully renovated. More photos and details below.
