Homes in Georgetown don’t usually offer many surprises. A traditional Federal exterior usually means a fairly staid looking interior. However, with this installment of This Week’s Find, what you see is not what you get.

In 2008, the owner, a general contractor, took a relatively simple, 1928-built Georgetown home and turned it into a 3,400 square-foot, four-story display of modernity. The most striking interior element is the open column down the center of the house, grounded by a bright kitchen and capped by a peaked roof that is full of cut-out skylights. The middle floor has a few balconies and the overall effect is somehow one of a natural, treetop dwelling, with hallways and narrow staircases to connect the various perches and nooks.

As for layout, the main house has five bedrooms. The master suite is alone on the third floor and has a walk-in closet, double-headed shower and modern finishings. The roof deck is accessible from the master bedroom. On the lower level, there is a fifth bedroom and a one-bedroom unit than has been renting for $1,650 a month.

The outdoor spaces are thoughtfully executed, with a bamboo feature bordering the property, a mature tree sprouting up in the middle of the patio, a deck off the kitchen and the aforementioned roof deck up with the treetops.
