This Week's Find: The Ultimate Fixer-Upper

This Week’s Find is an enormous fixer-upper that, with a lot of elbow grease, could get a new lease on life.
The 3,350 square foot Victorian home at 4914 Ashby Street NW (map) has a long history in the Palisades and was for more than 50 years the home of the Greenbergs. The child development specialist and and author Polly Greenberg, who helped create one of the country’s first Head Start programs in Mississippi in 1965 and passed away last year, lived in the home and raised her family there.
Greenberg’s children spent their summers playing in the home’s big yard, swinging on a tire swing and conducting art projects on the sprawling front porch, according to daughter Liza Greenberg. Her late mother loved watching the Palisades 4th of July parades from a vantage point about a block away each year.
“My mother sat on the corner of Ashby Street and MacArthur Blvd for virtually every one of the 47 annual parades,” she wrote to UrbanTurf.
Apart from its history, the home has plenty of character that make it a great candidate for someone with a big renovation budget. Original features are still visible throughout, and many rooms boast details like exposed beams, very high ceilings and bay windows. One bathroom retains what looks like an original clawfoot tub.
