This Week's Find: Looking Down the Well in Capitol Hill: Figure 1
The well at 1217 C Street NE

UT readers are likely wondering what they are looking at in the above photograph.

Built in 1910 as a two-unit flat a couple blocks north of Lincoln Park in Capitol Hill, This Week’s Find was converted to a 3,150 square-foot three-bedroom home in 2001 and the photo above is of the centered window well that was originally used as a light and ventilation source for each unit. When the property became a single-family home, the well was preserved and now runs from the top floor down to the main level.

When the property was converted, iron cat-walks were also added and the master bedroom ceiling was removed to expose and incorporate the original brick and mortar construction of the home. As for the listing’s more traditional features, it has a large main level with a breakfast room, a rear deck (that leads to a small backyard) and a large living room and kitchen. There is also a large lower level with an outdoor seating area.
