While this DC alley has hosted several horse stables, warehouses, and workshops throughout the 19th and early 20th century, several of those properties were converted into residences in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including This Week's Find.

Located in the Capitol Hill Historic District just inside Walter Houp Court, which was named after one of the city's first land patentees, this single-story, 968 square-foot former carriage house was repurposed from its industrial past by Bill and Suzanne Caldwell in 1982. The couple lived on adjacent 11th Street and used the alley property as their law office.

The current owner, Amy Quinn, converted the property into a one-bedroom residence in 2004. The resulting house has deep skylights and 11 foot-tall ceilings, along with restored finishes like the window and door trim. The walkway outside the front door can serve as a patio area, and the living room has a skylight and a set of recessed shelving. The eat-in kitchen also has a skylight, and the top of the cabinetry doubles as a display shelf.

Quin added a ladder and a loft area to the skylit den, which also leads into the bedroom and to the skylit full bath with shower stall and laundry area beneath storage. The carpeted walk-in closet conceals the original stable doors, and a small alcove hall shares decorative tile flooring with the half-bath and provides access to attic storage space.
