In honor of the beginning of summer, UrbanTurf is highlighting a custom contemporary beach house in Delaware. Constructed in 2016, the house hit the market for the first time a few weeks ago and went under contract, with multiple offers, in five days.

The lot in Rehoboth Beach where the home sits was occupied by a summer house when the owners purchased it, and because many houses in Rehoboth lack proper insulation and comforts for year-round residency, they opted to tear it down and start from scratch. The owners spent a lot of time in the Hamptons and wanted a home that referenced the Hamptons aesthetic.

The couple commissioned architect Bill Feeney, who had previously remodeled a house for them, to design the home. In order to keep within the design restrictions set forth by the city of Rehoboth, the house had to retain an overall style that was compatible with its neighbors, but with a more "modern vernacular", as Feeney describes.

"We used simple volumes, similar materials to what you would see around the beach, and I think it has a beach feeling, but it is also, especially on the inside, much more clean, much more bright," Feeney explained to UrbanTurf.

To accomplish this aesthetic, there are 20 foot-high ceilings throughout the open living area, which also makes the house well-suited for entertaining guests. The main level employs glass walls to great effect, creating a seamless transition to the rear terrace with a heated salt-water pool.

A solarium-style porch with a pitched roof juts out into the backyard and enjoys a wood-burning fireplace. Across from the pool, a cabana was built out of and conceals a storage shed.

A master suite is also on the main level, boasting 10-foot ceilings, a spa bath with 8-foot shower, and separate access to the pool deck. The second floor also has a master suite.

Despite the home's location in a more wooded part of town, Bermuda shutters adorn the windows along the façade, adding to the beach house feel; a farmhouse-style prefinished metal roof tops the house off.
