Some of DC's most intriguing homes are created out of buildings that were not originally meant for residences (churches, schools, garages), a practice that gained popularity as demand in the housing market rose. This practice is nothing new, however, as This Week's Find illustrates.

This Week's Find is one of four residences carved out of the old Eckington School. Four local artists purchased the school from the city in the late 1970s; two lots of land, next to and behind the school, were also included in the deal.

This 3,800 square-foot loft is one of the four units that was converted by the group of artists in 1981 after the lot behind the school was sold to fund the remodeling. Each unit afforded the artists a staggering amount of live and work space and the ability to design each area to their liking. This is the first time that any of the residences have been listed for sale.

The unit has multiple private entrances, enjoys 15 foot ceilings, and has sixteen of the school's original oversized windows that flood the unit with natural light; the large doors and oak flooring are also original.

The roughly 3,800 square feet of space is currently divided to create two massive bedrooms, with a kitchen on a lower level, which also has separate egress to the street.

The new owner will also have access to a separate storage space and owns one-quarter of the lot to the east of the building, which has a garden area. More details and images are below.
