Thanks, Feds: DC Area Has Lowest Unemployment in the Country

The DC area has the lowest unemployment rate of any metro area in the country, according to a report released earlier today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate dropped from 6.2 percent in August 2010 to 5.9 percent in September.
The honor is thanks in large part to increased federal government spending and the jobs that has created. Even though the DC area gained 34,400 private sector jobs between September 2009 and September 2010, the large majority of those positions were created as a result of federal spending.
It should be noted that while the DC area overall has low unemployment, the unemployment rate for DC proper is 9.5 percent. That may seem high, but compared to Sin City where 15 percent of residents are currently unemployed, it doesn’t seem quite so bad.
