The story of The Meriwether building -- a registered landmark -- begins during the Civil war, when an act of Congress made it a sanctuary for formerly enslaved women and children. It was named after one of its founders, African-American activist Mary Robinson Meriwether. Later it was transformed into an orphanage, and then into a hub for community arts and education.
