Recommended: 100+ Walking Tours This Weekend

This weekend Cultural Tourism DC is hosting its semi-annual WalkingTown DC, a two-day event packed full of free walking tours of the District’s neighborhoods. More than 100 tours are scheduled in all corners of the city, making for a great opportunity to check out neighborhoods where your daily life might not otherwise take you. It’s also perfect for visiting some of the more off-the-beaten-path places that you may have read about on UrbanTurf but never ventured to. (Have you ever been to Brookland? Anacostia? Florida Market?)

The first tours start at 8:30am Saturday morning and the last ones finish at 7pm Sunday evening. The website has the schedule broken down by day, but there is also a convenient PDF brochure which lists all the tours in an easy-to-print format.

In addition to the 90+ walking tours, there are 11 bike tours this year (bring your own bike and helmet; Bike and Roll is offering discounts for those who need to rent a bike).

Here are a few tours that pique our interest:

Saturday Morning

• Explore Florida Market/Capital City Market — 9-10:30am
• Anacostia: The Ridge and the River (bike tour) — 8:30am-12:30pm
• NoMa: From the Beatles to NPR — 10:30-11:45am

Saturday Afternoon

• 16th Street: Avenue of the Presidents — 2-4pm
• Hillcrest and East Washington Heights — 2-4pm
• DC Movie and TV Sites Tour — 3-4pm & 4-5pm
• Southwest DC: Renewing Urban Renewal — 3-5pm

Sunday Morning

• Georgetown Historic District — 10am-Noon
• Shaw: Where DC Comes Together, Part 1 — 10am-12:30pm
• Old Takoma Park — 10am-12:30pm

Sunday Afternoon

• Overview of Brookland History and Architecture — Noon-1:30pm & 1:30-3pm
• Shaw: Where DC Comes Together, Part 2 — 1-3:30pm
• I Heart AU: Campus Tour of American University — 2-3:30pm
