If the walls of 1222 28th Street NW could talk, they'd have nearly three centuries worth of stories to tell.
The one-bedroom Georgetown cottage -- believed to be one of the oldest homes in the city, built in the early 18th century -- will hit the market later this week. Local lore holds that the home was built by a British sea captain, and that the beams themselves may have come from a ship that ran aground, giving the house an origin story that feels more like historical fiction than real estate listing.
The home's original wood paneling and flooring have survived the centuries, as have handmade glass panes in the windows and Belgian tiles in front of the hearth. The listing was the longtime home of Ann Caracristi, the former deputy director of the National Security Agency, who lived there for 65 years until 2016.
The current owners are putting the home on the market because they are moving out of the city. It will hit the market for $1.198 million with Teddy Sonner of Long & Foster on Wednesday.
