UrbanTurf usually stays away from publishing rankings or lists…except at the end of the year when we look back at what DC’s residential real estate scene had to offer during the previous 12 months. So, this week we are looking at not only the best but the most intriguing and peculiar things that came across our radar over the course of 2017. Enjoy.

When you hear “300 square feet” in DC, it conjures up images of tony micro-units or trendy tiny houses. Similarly, when you hear that a piece of real estate is listed for $40,000 in the city, one thinks of parking spaces or storage units. However, a rare piece of real estate at that price and size hit the market this year that didn’t fit into any of those categories: a poolside cabana.

A single cabana at The Colonnade

Located at The Colonnade condos in Wesley Heights (map), this corner unit double cabana comes with two sets of sliding louvered doors that open poolside and is the only cabana that comes with a full bath with tub instead of a shower. The unit is one of 21 cabanas in the community and can only be purchased by a current condo owner in the building. Only three of those 21 cabanas have changed hands over the past decade.

While many people have expressed interest in the cabana, it hasn’t sold yet. This particular unit is large enough to entertain or lounge, and can house a wine fridge, seating area or storage of pool accessories. Just don’t try to list it on Airbnb.
