Montgomery County Council Votes in Favor of Purple Line

It still has a long way to go, but the purple line is a little closer to becoming a reality after the Montgomery County Council voted to endorse it yesterday. The Council voted unanimously in favor of the light-rail option between Bethesda and New Carrolton, according to the Washington Business Journal.

As proposed, the light rail line would run for 16 miles between Bethesda and New Carrollton and have 12 stops. The line would connect to the orange, red and green lines of the Metro, and there would be a stop at The University of Maryland at College Park.

While the Journal noted that the local consensus would be factored into the decision as to whether or not to go forward with the project, there are still a number of other things that will determine its fate.

The project is expected to cost approximately $1.2 billion and it will be competing for federal funds with projects around the country. Furthermore, the state’s transportation funding has been hurt by dropping revenues, so the possible start date of 2012 is a thing of the past, and no new date has been set.
