A rendered elevation of the new project.
The redevelopment of the former Holzbeierlein Bakery warehouse in Shaw took a step forward recently when the design for the mixed-use project was deemed compatible “with the character of the industrial complex of buildings.” The Historic Preservation Review Board made its ruling last week.
Old City Development Group and PGN Architects are redeveloping the warehouse at 1812-1827 Wiltberger Street NW (map) into a mixed-use development with retail and office space below residential units.

Plans for the warehouse across Wiltberger Street from the Wonder Bread factory call for about 12,000 square feet of retail space on the cellar and ground levels, 28,700 square feet of office space on the second and third levels, and nine residential units on the fourth floor and penthouse.
The Holzbeirlein Bakery was started by Michael Holzbeierlein, a German immigrant, in 1893. In addition to the warehouse, the bakery had a retail location on 7th Street NW. It declared bankruptcy in the 1950s.
