Map Amendment Could Pave Way For Hotel Development at Union Market
Last year, a boutique hotel was pitched near Union Market. This week, a zoning application was filed to potentially make way for the new development.
EDENS filed an application for a map amendment at 1271 5th Street NE (map) on Monday that would change the zoning for the address from PDR-1 (production, distribution and repair) to MU-8B, which allows for medium-density, mixed-use development.

The map amendment was filed to work in conjunction with a proposal filed by EDENS last year for a four-story hotel at the 5th Street site. The new hotel would be sandwiched in between an apartment building at 550 Morse Street and a planned 600-unit project that is part of Gallaudet University and JBG SMITH's sprawling plans for the area.
The upper three levels and penthouse of the new project would house hotel rooms, while the ground floor would include the lobby, as well as potentially a restaurant or other commercial, retail, and/or service uses.
The application for the map amendment will likely go before the Zoning Commission in the coming months.
