Funding Canceled For 15-Minute Train From DC To Baltimore

Plans for a 15-minute train connecting DC and Baltimore took a big hit last week.

On Friday, the Federal Railroad Administration canceled two grants totaling over $26 million for the Baltimore-Washington Superconducting Magnetic Levitation Project. A press release from the Department of Transportation cited "a decade of poor planning, significant community oppositions, and tremendous cost overruns" as reasons for the funding being canceled. 

Pitched a decade ago, the plan was for a high-speed magnetic-levitation train connecting DC, BWI Airport, and Baltimore at speeds of over 300 mph. The train would run mostly underground between DC and Baltimore with an above-ground stretch along the Baltimore–Washington Parkway near BWI. 

Estimated to cost somewhere between $10 billion and $12 billion, the project had a number of fits and starts over the years. The canceling of funding last week may be the final nail in the coffin.
