Following two years of declines, DC's population rose ever so slightly last year.

New census estimates reported just before Christmas showed that the city gained about 3,000 residents in 2022, putting DC's population at approximately 671,803.

Virginia saw its population increase by 26,254 people, or 0.3 percent, while Maryland saw its population drop slightly by approximately 10,000 people or 0.2 percent.

“There was a sizeable uptick in population growth last year compared to the prior year’s historically low increase,” Kristie Wilder, a demographer at the Census Bureau, said about the U.S. population. Wilder noted that the increase was largely due to “a rebound in net international migration, coupled with the largest year-over-year increase in total births since 2007.”
