A month ago, UrbanTurf reported on the debut of a local line of modular getaway homes in the DC area — and the concept is now exceeding expected demand.

TOMU Villas, based in Frederick, Maryland, offers prefabricated "Japanese and Scandinavian-inspired getaway dwellings" with studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations. The smallest unit starts at $99,500 and interested buyers can make a reservation to pre-order their unit for delivery next year.

TOMU founder Chris Osaka told UrbanTurf that the company is approaching $3 million worth of pre-orders and that they are ramping up production to meet demand. So far, reservations are split between studios and two-bedrooms.

Roughly 80% of the orders so far have come from the DC area, although there have also been "orders from as far south as Florida and as far west as California," Osaka shared. He also said that a number of DC area buyers are ordering now as they search for a site suitable to install.

Photos of a model unit are expected to be released after the holidays.
