Continuing the trend of outpacing the rest of the country, the DC area posted a 4.8 percent increase in home prices between August 2009 and August 2010, according to the latest Case Shiller report. Nationally, home prices in the 20-city index increased 1.7 percent during that period.

The Case Shiller report also showed that prices in the DC area increased slightly (0.3 percent) between July and August 2010. The DC area market was one of five metropolitan markets (Detroit, Chicago, New York and Las Vegas) that showed an increase during that period.

The news comes just a couple days after a report from the National Association of Realtors, which stated existing homes sales volume rose 10 percent nationally between August and September 2010. However, that increase should be taken with a grain of salt as a notable bump was expected after the hangover of the first-time home credit wore off.
