DC area apartment hunters always spend time making a few mental calculations while sifting through rental ads: Where is the nearest Metro stop? Is it on the Red Line? Is there a bus stop nearby? Will I have to bike on busy streets, or are there paths that can take me safely from home to work?
In September, Walk Score launched an apartment search tool that answers those questions. Users enter a work address, and how they plan on commuting (walking, bicycle, public transportation or driving). Based on the provided information, apartment listings from Craigslist are sorted by estimated travel time. The results can also be filtered by Walk Score, price and size.

Mapped results for 14th and K Street NW
The website interface, which is a map with apartment icons that reveal their price and bedroom size when you hover over them, is fairly easy to use and more pleasing to look at than Craigslist.
Walk Score has become a popular addition to for-sale and rental listings, as agents realize that buyers want walkable neighborhoods and don’t want the expense and stress that comes with commuting.
