Twitter, Reddit and Facebook offer ways to monitor traffic when planning commutes. Now, Arlington residents have a new tool to help plan and manage their journeys.
The county has launched a new website that shows real-time traffic conditions in Arlington via 180 cameras on major county-owned roads and intersections throughout Arlington. Streets owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation will soon be added and the streams will be accessible by both desktop and mobile devices. The content can be refreshed once per minute to keep residents from overloading the bandwidth.
“This new service is part of the County’s initiative to promote open data and better serve all those who use Arlington streets,” said Dennis Leach, Director of Arlington County’s Transportation Division in a statement on Arlington County’s website. “We’re utilizing technology to provide the public with real-time traffic conditions so that they can make informed decisions about their planned trip – anything from a commute to a special event.”
