Amazon Wants to Open Doors in the DC Area

Two weeks ago, news broke that Amazon was developing a smart doorbell to admit deliveries from the company when no one is home. Now, the in-home delivery option is available for Amazon Prime members in the DC area and other select cities.
Prime members can order a Key In-Home Kit, which comes with an Amazon Cloud Cam and an Amazon Key-compatible smart lock. Once those are installed, members with the service can select an in-home delivery option upon checkout, authorizing the delivery person to drop the package off just inside the front door.
The key will alert the resident when the door is opened, activating the Cloud Cam to record and live-stream video of who is entering, and notify the resident once the delivery is complete and the door is locked again.

And the Amazon Key is not just for homeowners — any apartment resident (who is allowed to install their own smart-lock) can provide any security codes needed beforehand to ensure the delivery person is able to reach their door to complete delivery.
The Amazon Key option also enables off-site locking and unlocking of the door and scheduled access for friends, family and recurring visitors; access will eventually expand to professional service providers like housecleaning companies, pet-sitting and -walking company Rover.com, and other services from Amazon Home Services.
