Amazon Abandons Plans For HQ2 in New York

Weeks of mounting political pressure and public dissension in New York have come to a head for Amazon, as the company confirmed today that it will not move forward with a location for its second headquarters in the state.

"After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens," the company announced today. "While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City."

Rather than build a new campus in Long Island City, the company may expand its existing 5,000-employee presence in the state. It is not yet apparent whether the company's National Landing campus in Northern Virginia will become any larger.

While rumors that Amazon was going to pull out of Queens compelled many former finalist jurisdictions, including Prince George's County and Baltimore, to court the company in recent weeks, those efforts may have been in vain.

"We do not intend to reopen the HQ2 search at this time," the statement continues. "We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the U.S. and Canada."

Update -- Statement from the Arlington County Board Chair: "After speaking with an Amazon representative earlier today, we have confirmed that we are moving forward as planned with Amazon’s upcoming headquarters in Arlington – nothing has changed."
