While many in the city have lamented the lack of family-sized units in new development, a newly-approved project in Buzzard Point looks to be part of the solution.
On Monday, the Zoning Commission granted approval to a mixed-use development from TM Associates and PGN Architects, which would deliver 76 apartments above 3,804 square feet of commercial space to First and Q Streets SW, within view of the new DC United stadium. All of the apartments will be affordable to households earning up to 30 and 50 percent of area median income; the unit mix will include one studio, 48 one-bedrooms, 18 two-bedrooms and 9 four-bedrooms.

There is currently a single-story commercial property with surface parking on the site at 1542-1550 First Street SW (map); the new construction would replace the existing property with a ten-story building plus penthouse, with a below-grade parking level with 19 vehicular and 26 bicycle spaces.
The commercial spaces will likely include a restaurant with patio seating and wrap-around support services for residents administered by United Planning Organization.
