A new report shows that apartment rents rose in the DC region this year, but not as much as expected.
ApartmentList's latest national rent report shows that rents in the city increased 1.9% year-over-year so far in 2025, below the growth from last year.
"Five months into the year, rents in Washington, DC have risen 1.9%," the report stated. "This is a slower rate of growth compared to what the city was experiencing at this point last year: from January to May 2024 rents had increased 2.5%."
A quick look at rents around the region reveals that Arlington saw the highest rent growth in the DC area, with median rents increasing 4%. Median rents in Alexandria followed close behind, increasing by 3.6%.
"Washington, DC is the #13 most expensive large city in the U.S.," the report stated. "The median rent in Washington, DC is 57.4% higher than the national, and is similar to the prices you would find in San Diego, CA ($2,314) and Santa Ana, CA ($2,183)."
